classical liberalism

classical liberalism
That form of liberalism which was concerned with the extension of liberty and tolerance and which flourished in the middle of the nineteenth century. Adherents were concerned to develop the capacities and raise the living standards of its citizens, but they felt that the best means towards achieving this object was the selfeffacement of the state. They believed in retrenchment, government economy and self-reliance, generally taking the view that it was not the government’s role to undertake what the individual should be doing for him/ herself. An updated variant of classical liberalism (neo-liberalism) influenced New Right thinkers of the mid-1970s. They also argued for laissez-faire, the minimal state and human freedom, of which economic freedom was seen as an essential part.
